Why Join a Chamber of Commerce

Growing your business is often as much about the people you know as the stuff you sell. And that’s where networking comes in. Admittedly, networking isn’t the favourite activity of all of us. Myself included. However, its importance can’t be overstated.

Finding the right people to network with can also be challenging. And that’s where being part of a chamber of commerce comes in. You’ll be meeting people within a geographic area who have the same goals as you. Doing business and getting to know other business people. Within a geographic area.

If you find networking a challenge, hack the system; join a chamber of commerce.

why you should join a chamber of commerce

I’m a member of two chambers of commerce. I’m a training partner of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. And a founding member of the Lanarkshire Chamber of Commerce and Trade.

Via the former I’ve landed some pretty decent, high profile clients and met some influencial people along the way. I always make sure to look up the people I’ve met at chamber of commerce events afterwards on LinkedIn. That way I’m mixing “real world” networking with virtual networking. Keeping in contact on LinkedIn pays dividends. You can keep up to date with your contacts when they change jobs or companies. And by posting content to your LinkedIn profile regularly, you’re keeping them up to date with what you’re working on.

And hey, while you’re here, add me on LinkedIn too!

Always follow up with people you meet at networking events by adding them on LinkedIn.

This week I attended what turned out to be a fantastic networking lunch organised by Lanarkshire Chamber of Commerce. The networking part of the event was made easier for me as I was working at it! I find it easier to introduce myself and explain what my business is about if I have a camera in my hand.

Part of the job was to film some quick interviews with some of the attendees. Here are two of them.

All in all, the event was fantastic and I’m excited to be bringing some of my specialist digital marketing training to the Lanarkshire Chamber of Commerce in the future. In the meantime, I have 3 hands-on, practical training workshops coming up with my friends at the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. More information these will be posted here nearer the time.
